The U.S. Department of Energy has announced that it has awarded $188 million to small businesses in 34 states to develop "clean energy technologies with a strong potential for success."
Small businesses employ nearly 40 percent of the U.S. science and engineering workforce, the DOE said.
Four New Jersey businesses will receive money to support projects from the prototype to pilot operation stages.
Exelus, of Livingston’s grant is for a method of converting non-food biomass into petrochemicals such as ethylene and propylene, and for a new method for converting algae into aviation fuel.
Princeton Power Systems, of Princeton, received funds for a project to develop an advanced hydro and ocean power electronic conversion system that makes the power they generate more compatible with the electric grid.
Structured Materials Industries, of Piscataway, got money for a project that will use new nanotechnology techniques in the conversion of heat into electricity.
Universal Display, of Ewing, won funds for development of high-efficiency solid state white lighting sources.
