Energy first for Glanbia
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Glanbia Ingredients Ireland, the business that processes one third of Ireland`s milk pool into dairy products, is the first Irish owned company to achieve the IS 393 Energy Management System certification. Glanbia is now the first dairy company in the world to hold this standard, which was developed by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) in conjunction with the National Standards Authority of Ireland.

The IS 393 is the energy equivalent of the ISO 14001 for environmental management systems and is the basis for the design of the new EU energy standard.

"The systems developed by our environmental team to reach this accreditation have strategic and competitive benefits, enabling us to address issues of competitiveness - namely cost, which is particularly relevant in the context of dramatic energy price increases - as well as allowing the business to reach its sustainability targets by significantly increasing process efficiency and reducing the level of carbon emissions. The IS 393 represents our ongoing commitment to adopting new, more stringent approaches to managing energy efficiency," says Jim Bergin, chief executive of Glanbia Ingredients Ireland.

IS 393 is a very powerful output based tool. It covers all aspects of a company`s approach to managing energy and enters a firm into a process of continuous improvement. The energy review is the cornerstone of IS 393; it provides an understanding of where energy is used within the organisation and thus forms the basis for prioritising the efforts to reduce energy usage.
