Energy research centers planned
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
BRISTOL, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Tobacco Commission is set to consider funding for energy research centers statewide.

The commission is meeting in Bristol on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss about $28 million in funding for eight special projects and research centers.

Centers in Abingdon and Wise would study clean coal and other environmentally friendly technologies. Funding is also being considered to establish a sustainable energy research center in Danville and a nuclear energy research center in Bedford County.

Additional funding is being considered for a Gretna facility that converts crops into biodiesel fuel.

Funding requests are expected to go before the full 31-member Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission on Thursday.
