The European Commission
approves Abengoa’s Bioenergy
Sustainability Assurance
Standard (RBSA)
Madrid - The RED Bioenergy Sustainability Assurance Standard (RBSA) developed by Abengoa was approved by the European Commission , in a process that will culminate with its coming into force in the 27 member states of the EU twenty days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, is the first company to implement this system in Spain, which was presented by the European Commissioner for Energy, Günther Öttinger, together with a further six standards.
Developed within the framework of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the RBSA Standard demonstrates the compliance of any raw material or production process with the requirements of the Directive, from agricultural production through to sales of biofuels, including the industrial transformation processes.
The RBSA Standard establishes binding operational requirements for all participating economic agents, which also apply to their management and maintenance processes, and sets the highest quality levels for the certification processes and independent auditing of the information supplied.
Furthermore, this system incorporates innovative technology developed by Abengoa, principally for calculating greenhouse gas emissions and developing sustainability maps, to enable an effective and comprehensive implementation of these new sustainability requirements in its supply chains.
The biofuels developed by Abengoa will be able to be sold with this “sustainable” certification across the whole of the EU, which will uniquely identify this guarantee in every EU country.
Manuel Sánchez Ortega, CEO of Abengoa, highlighted the support that this approval “represents for our work and commitment to sustainable development, which is not only present in our products and services but also seeks to guarantee the sustainability of our processes. This show of confidence encourages us to continue searching for and developing innovative solutions that enable us to address the increasingly demanding challenges in the field of sustainability”.
