Two sub-contractors have been appointed to undertake work in the development of a 50MW biomass facility which its developers claim will be the largest plant of its kind in Scotland.
Southampton based machinery and components manufacturer, Saxlund International Ltd, and Nottingamshire based equipment supplier, Canning Conveyor Ltd, have been contracted to design, deliver and commission the biomass handling system for the facility, which is set to replace a coal-fired power plant at papermaker Tullis Russell's paper mill in Fife.
The biomass plant is being developed by RWE npower renewables who signed an agreement in September 2009 to work in partnership with Tullis Russell on the project, with the aim of providing the mill with both steam and electricity (see this NewEnergyFocus.com story).
Saxlund and Canning have been contracted to the project by engineering and construction services company Aker Solutions, which was appointed by RWE as one of the two main contractors to take forward the £200 million facility in February 2010 (see this NewEnergyFocus.com story).

Under the new agreement, Saxlund will be supplying the biomass reception and screening system and the bulk storage and discharge with several Saxlund rotary ‘TubeFeeders' - which are used in the transfer of biomass feedstock from the storage facility to the combustion part of the plant, as well as the elevating chain conveying system used in this process.
The company claims work will start immediately, with deliveries starting in 2011 and commissioning in March 2013.
Commenting on the contract, Frank Boyles, managing director of Saxlund International Ltd, said: "We are very happy to have been awarded this further contract with Aker Solutions. The award will allow us to demonstrate the quality of our engineering and project management competence and ability to be cost effective in a competitive market."
Johan Cnossen, senior vice president, Europe, Middle East & Africa region for Aker Solutions' process and construction business area, added: "Aker Solutions has extensive engineering and construction capability in power generation facilities, particularly in the UK and the US.
"We are looking forward to working together with all our key partners on this important biomass renewable energy project."
