U of S opens bioprocessing plant
Tuesday, January 11, 2011

The University of Saskatchewan officially opened its new facility that will study plant compounds for possible use in products such as biofuels and health products.

The bioprocessing plant is equipped with about $1.2 million worth of equipment designed to isolate components of plants, including Saskatchewan crops.

Extracting and purifying naturally occurring molecules allows researchers to pursue the natural products in plants that have potential for use in items such as food, biofuel and vaccines and medicine for humans and animals.

The facility - funded by the provincial Agriculture Ministry and operated by the U of S college of agriculture and bioresources - has a mandate to collaborate with industry partners on research and development with the goal of commercializing successful work.
