PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - The University of Northern BC celebrated several firsts on Thursday.
Blow torch in hand, UNBC President Doctor George Iwama lit the university's cutting-edge new bioenergy gasification system for the first time.
The gasifier itself represents a first in Canada.
Iwama says UNBC will be the first Canadian University campus to be heated entirely using bioenergy.
The project is the product of a number of successful partnerships between education, research and industry.
Prince George-based IDL Projects constructed the building, Vancouver-based Nexterra Energy installed the gasifier, and local sawmill Lakeland Mills will provide the fuel.
