U.S. Sen. Harkin announces more than $1.6 million for Iowa biorefineries
Tuesday, March 16, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), today announced that a total of $1,644,242.64 is coming to eight Iowa biorefineries to promote production of advanced biofuels.

These payments were authorized under section 9005 Bioenergy Program for Advanced Biofuels in the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, the farm bill. Harkin helped to create this program as the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

“We worked very hard to include strong investments in clean energy and biofuels in the 2008 farm bill and I am pleased to see these funds being put into action,” said Harkin. “In addition to aiding locally owned biorefineries, these investments have far reaching benefits for Iowans associated with the biofuels industry such as farmers and equipment manufacturers. On top of this, the production and use of biofuels continues to spur Iowa’s economy, lower energy costs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and protect our natural resources.”

Under the farm bill, payments are made to eligible producers in rural areas to support and ensure an expanding production of advanced biofuels. Payments are based on the amount of biofuels a recipient produces from renewable biomass, other than corn kernel starch. Eligible examples include biofuels derived from cellulose, crop residue, animal, food and yard waste material, biogas (landfill and sewage waste treatment gas), vegetable oil and animal fat.

The recipients of this funding in Iowa are:
